Seven Toschi Syrups That Don't Contain What Their Name Says

If you run a café, you have had this conversation at the counter: a customer asks whether the hazelnut latte contains nuts, and nobody behind the bar knows the answer.

Toschi does publish full ingredient lists for its syrups. They sit on the company's Italian consumer shop, split across Italian and English pages, and almost nobody outside Italy ever finds them. We read every one of them for the range we stock in the Philippines.

Seven Toschi syrups are named after an ingredient that does not appear in the recipe at all. Two others are named in a way that rather hides the nuts that are in them.

This is not a criticism of Toschi. A flavoured syrup is, by definition, flavourings in sugar and water — that is the category, and it is the same across every major syrup brand. But if you are printing a menu, briefing a new barista, or answering a question at the till, you should know which is which.

1. Amaretto Syrup 1L — no almond

Ingredients: sugar, water, flavourings, colouring: caramel E150d.

Amaretto the liqueur is traditionally built on bitter almond or apricot kernel. Toschi's Amaretto syrup is built on flavourings. No almond, and no alcohol either.

2. Hazelnut Syrup 1L — no hazelnut

Ingredients: sugar, water, flavouring, vanillin, colouring: caramel E150a.

The single most common allergen question in a café, and the answer is that the hazelnut syrup contains no hazelnut. Note the vanillin — it is part of why the flavour reads as nutty and sweet rather than sharp.

3. Chocolate Syrup 1L — no cocoa

Ingredients: sugar, water, colouring: caramel E150a, flavouring.

This one surprises people. It is a clear-ish syrup coloured with caramel, not a chocolate sauce. If you want actual cocoa in the cup, you want the Toschi Chocolate Barista Sauce 2KG, which is 12.4% cocoa powder — a completely different product.

4. White Chocolate Syrup 1L — no milk, no cocoa butter

Ingredients: sugar, water, flavourings.

Three ingredients. This matters more than the others, because Toschi also makes a White Chocolate Topping that is a dairy product built on milk powder, whey and soya lecithin, and a White Chocolate Barista Sauce 2KG made with sweetened condensed milk. Same flavour name, three products, and only one of them has no dairy in it. Do not assume they behave — or declare — the same way.

5. Irish Cream Syrup 1L — no dairy, no alcohol

Ingredients: sugar, water, colouring: caramel E150a, natural coffee flavouring, acidity regulator: citric acid, flavourings.

No cream, no whiskey. Worth noticing that it contains a natural coffee flavouring — which is why it sits so comfortably in an espresso drink and can taste oddly flat in a milkshake.

6. Triple Sec Syrup 1L — no orange, no alcohol

Ingredients: sugar, water, flavouring.

The shortest ingredient list in the range. If you need real citrus in a mocktail, reach for the Orange Syrup 1L instead — that one is 22% orange juice.

7. Honey Syrup 1L — no honey

Ingredients: sugar, water, acidifier: citric acid, flavourings.

No honey at any percentage. One oddity worth flagging honestly: Toschi displays a Vegan badge on almost every syrup in this range, and it is genuinely product-specific — it disappears on every product that contains dairy or egg. It is also absent from Honey Syrup, even though nothing animal-derived appears in the ingredient list. We do not know why, and until Toschi tells us, we will not describe this syrup as vegan.

The two that really do contain nuts

The flip side matters more than the seven above, because this is where someone gets hurt.

Almond Milk Syrup 1L — sugar, water, almonds (10%), flavourings.
Orgeat Syrup 1L — sugar, water, flavourings (contain almonds).

Both contain almonds. Orgeat is the one to watch, because the nut is inside the flavouring rather than listed as an ingredient in its own right, and because “orgeat” means nothing to most customers — it turns up in horchata-style drinks and tiki cocktails without the word “almond” appearing anywhere on your menu.

An important limit on all of this

An ingredient missing from a published list is not an allergen clearance. Three reasons:

Toschi publishes ingredient lists, but no formal allergen declaration for the syrup range.
We have seen no statement about shared production lines or cross-contact for these syrups. A “may contain” line appears on only a handful of Toschi products, and none of them are syrups.
Recipes change, and a bottle in your store room may predate a reformulation. The label on the physical bottle always wins.

So: use this to answer “what is in it?”. Do not use it to clear a drink for a customer with a diagnosed allergy. If you need that, contact us and we will put the question to the manufacturer in writing.

Where these figures come from

Every ingredient list above is transcribed from product pages published by the manufacturer, Toschi Vignola s.r.l. of Savignano sul Panaro, Italy. They refer specifically to the 1L professional (Mixtime) bottles that we stock.

That distinction is not pedantry. Toschi sells several of the same flavours in a smaller 0.56L retail bottle, and the recipes are genuinely different — the 1L Orange is 22% orange juice against 10% in the retail bottle, and the 1L Strawberry is 35% strawberry against 22%. Specifications copied from a European retail listing will be wrong for the bottle on your bar. We have used only the 1L figures.
